Lori's Review: 4.5 Stars
Deathly Contagious: Book Two in the Contagium Trilogy

After the discovery of a zombie-proof safe house, things are finally looking up for Orissa Penwell. But her chance at happiness is shattered when someone she cares about is shot. Hell bent on revenge, Orissa will do whatever it takes to seek vengeance and get even.

Things quickly go from bad to worse and she finds herself lost and abandoned—and forced to face the zombie plagued world on her own. When lies, secrets, and desperation are added to the already harrowing world, Orissa discovers that zombies aren’t the only things to worry about.

What—or who—will justice cost her? And just how far will Orissa go to avenge someone she loves?
By now I hope you have downloaded the Contaguium Trilogy book: Deathly Contagious. If you haven't then feel free to enter our giveaway. It ends tonight at midnight. Needless to say I am still completely gaga over this series.
I had the wonderful oppurtunity to be a beta reader for this book. Let me tell you it is a great read. Fast paced full of action. There is a little bit of everything in it for everyone! There is no way I can write a full synopsis of the plot without giving away spoilers so I will just get to the good/bad part of my review.
The Good:
Orissa grows and matures a great deal in this book. She is still hard headed and kick butt but she is learning to pick her battles.
We get tons of new background on alot of characters. We learn more about almost every character in the first book. I felt like I knew the characters after the first book. Now I know that we still have a lot to learn.
I love the foreshadowing parts I can feel it leading up to a big reveal in book 3.
The chemistry between the characters is great.
We get to see the characters stomping zombie butt, rescuing new additions to the bunker, and we get to see them try to live a normal life at 'home'.
There are literally parts that scared the crap out of me. As a long time fan of the horror genre that is hard to do.
The Bad:
It ended way to fast even though it is longer than the first. I just wanna know what happens!!
Ugh the hillbillies! Just read it. I hated them. We are supposed to hate them so they should really be under the good but I have my reasons for putting them here. Not to mention I have to put SOMETHING here.
Having to hold the knowledge that everyone wants to know inside for a month has been torture.
Really this is a great book. It was hard not getting lost in the story and trying to stay focused and give feedback.
Just so you know if the Contagium Trilogy was ever made into movies Jensen Ackles has my vote for Hayden. Although he might be a little older than Hayden.

Kody Boye is officially on the automatic "to read" list!!!

On a cold, lonely night, a mysterious figure delivers a newly born infant into the arms of a poor woodcutter. That one act changes the child's life forever.

Odin Karussa grows up happy with the woodcutter, but throughout his youth his mind has always been set on becoming a knight, a protector of the people. There's only one problem--born a mage and incapable of wielding his power, he hides his gift away from his adopted father. One night the woodcutter stumbles into their tent and discovers him using magic. His father is terrified by the revelation and strikes Odin down. This act of betrayal is enough to force the fourteen year old Odin to flee to the capital and seek his fortune. Odin's magical abilites are discovered by a high mage and soon he is conscripted into the royal army to serve his king.

One stormy day, Odin is pulled from his afternoon classes and instructed to go to the courier's office--where, wrapped in parchment, a strange weapon has been delivered in his name. Shortly thereafter, panic ensues among the hierarchy when it is revealed that the weapon was created by the Drow. Fearing not only attack by the Drow, but that Odin is also a traitor, the court locks Odin within the castle's fifth tower, where only the most dangerous of villains are imprisoned.

Will Odin ever become the knight he desires to be?

A coming-of-age story about the power of might, perseverance, and the destinies that lie within us all, Blood begins a saga that follows one young man's journey toward what everyone else has deemed impossible.

I recieved this book from the author for an honest review.
Kody Boye is offically an author to watch!!!
Blood follows the story of Odin on his quest to become a knight. He was born to an unknown person and left with a man to raise as his own son.
What was good:
I love that Kody tells us the story behind the story before each of his books. Hearing that this tale was his Moms favorite made me smile.
The writing is drool worthy. I am not kidding here. I had so many passages highlighted on my kindle for this review. I think I will just use the first one I highlighted because it is a good sample of Kody's mastery of words:
"Morning came with the scent of dew and the glistening kiss of rain. Through he had slept for only a few mere hours, and while his body protested even the idea of rising and riding on horseback thorughout the rest of the day, Odin opened his eyes to a world that looked absolutely magical. Water droplets reflected golden-orange light in every direction, creating miniature rainbows across his plane of vision; the plants glowed green, as if new and virgin-birthed; and the earth seemed fresh and new, almost as if the devastating storm had not happened and thrust him into this horrible situation. Everything seemed godlike, in a way, as colors pulsated in ways never before and the light appeared more physical than it seemed entirely possible. Beauty couldn't describe what Odin saw through his eyes at that particular moment."pg. 31.
Wow I think my head exploded when I read that. I was like ok..I'm in let's go for this ride.
Odin is a great character. He overcomes alot of problems in this book. He is everything you want and need in a hero. He is smart, strong, well read, magical, good with a weapon, and above all brave. Even when it seems like he was going to give up he didn't.
Even though it is a fantasy the character were very real. Through Kody's descriptions of both the places and people in this book I was transported. Isn't that the point of reading books.
What wasn't so good:
I really don't have anything too bad to say about the book. There we some minor typos but I have made myself pretty clear that I do not ever judge a book by typos. However, I will mention it because I know it drives some people nuts.
The fantasy genre is not really for me. While I enjoyed this book and its characters that was because of Kody's writing. If another less talented writer had told this story I wouldn't have been as enthralled as I was with this book. If you are a fan of fantasy than definately get this book. Now I am patiently waiting for his YA project with Rhiannon Frater!!!!! After reading two of his books and being a huge fan of Rhiannon Frater I can tell that book is going to rock my face off!!!!

Kody Boye was born and raised in Southeastern Idaho. Since his initial publication in the Yellow Mama Webzine in 2007, he has gone on to sell nearly three-dozen stories to various markets. He is the author of the short story collection Amorous Things, the novella The Diary of Dakota Hammell, the zombie novel Sunrise and the dark fantasy novel Blood. His fiction has been described as ‘Surreal, beautiful and harrowing’ (Fantastic Horror,) while he himself has been heralded as a writer beyond his years(Bitten by Books.) He currently lives and writes in the Austin, Texas area.

What's with all the female writers?

I am reading Blood by one of my new favorite authors Kody Boye. After I finished reading for the night last night I started thinking about my reading habits. I realized I read almost exclusively female writers. I can list the male writers I have read in the last year. Harry Shannon, Kody Boye, Stephen King, J.L. Bryan, R.G Richards, George RR Martin, Nick James and Jonathan Mayberry. Oh and the dude that wrote Alice in Deadland. That's roughly 11 of the 75 of the books I have read so far for 2012. (I read Mr. Martin last summer so he doesn't count).  I do not consciously do this. I do not search out female writers. It just happens to land that way. Is it because more female writers self publish? Do more female writers write in my favorite genre(s)? I really don't know. So I am planning on reading and review a few books by some male indies this month. Starting with Kody Boye's Blood. Then I think I am going to read everything that Logan Rutherford has put out. He has a ton of free shorts on Amazon. Also the first two books of his Visitors Trilogy are out! He is only 17 and a HUGE Tamara Rose Blodgett fan (like me)!!! So that's what you have to look forward to from me in the next week!
*I am also reading a GREAT book by Katie Andrews Potter called Going Over Home. It's not due out until July.

*Also look for our reviews of The Hungry by Stephen Booth and Harry Shannon. When I talked to Mr. Shannon last winter he says there is a sequel due out this summer!!!

*Don't forget to enter to win Deathly Contagious. It's one of the best Zombie novels out there.  Just follow our blog and leave us a comment!

Fifty Shades Darker

Kami's Review
2 Stars
Oh where to start. Christian was considerably more domineering and controling in this book than he was in the last book. Having Ana followed, buying the company she works for, and making sure she is not allowed to go out of town on a business trip no matter how much she really wanted to go. I wanted to punch him in the face a lot in this book.

Quote from last book:
Ana "Are you a Sadist?"
Christian "I am a dominant."

Well surprise surprise, he admits to finally being a sadist in this book. I however was not surprised by this.

While Ana stood up to him a little more in this book, she is still weak and annoying. I still dont like her. I really did try, but I just cant.

I generally enjoy a good erotic novel. I dont know why, but something about these books where there is literally sex on every other god damn page, is really annoying to me.

So we get a perverted boss, a psycho ex, and the crazy pedophile Mrs. Robinson to deal with in this book. I missed the emails between the two. Yes there were some, but they werent quite up to what they were in the last book. Ana and Christian built a lot on their relationship in this book and they came a long way, however they still have a long way to go.

Off to read the last book, then I think I need to read a good zombie book to get this crap out of my head.

51 Shades of Grey or....

Whatever the actual name of this book is.

Daunted by the singular sexual tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven and demanding Fifty Shades.

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront the anger and envy of the women who came before her, and make the most important decision of her life.

Lori's Review: 2 Stars
I put this book (aka my Kindle) down with disgust after I finished reading it around 1 am today. Ugh what a giant piece of horse crap! I have absolutely no intentions of going on to the 3rd book for the time being. My goal is to read it by the end of June. Who knows? I have a lot of reading on my plate! I've got to stop making room for pieces of crap like this and get back to books that I actually like to read. I think I hated this book more than the first one because Kami and I read it in radio silence (aka no texts messages and blog notes making fun of it). Not to mention Ana is probably the dumbest character ever written.
The good:
The emails once again were my favorite part of this book.
I liked that Mr. Grey seems to be opening up. It still doesn't make me like him all that well but at least I understand him. Ana on the other hand....I have no clue why she's such an idiot.
I just stared at my computer screen trying to think of more good things I liked about this book...and I can't. So on to....
The bad:
The plot. It's just bad. I was ok with this book being a romance/love story. Even if they are suffering from a bad case of what author Rhiannon Frater calls insta-love. The additon of the thriller aspect got on my nerves. It is not well done and is tacked on the end like a would be cliffhanger. I have not,not wanted to read a follow up book so badly. Ever. I realize I should have expected this as Twilight is filled with cliffhangers and bad guys.
The sex scenes are all the same just tweaked a little bit. Ana experiences two orgasms every single time they have sex. Since we are reading this book through Ana's POV we know that she is not faking them like women tend to do on occasion. It's not in the least bit realistic. It's a gross missrepresentaion of what most women experience. I don't even believe it is possible unless you have some sort of nerve disorder where the nerves in your vaginal wall have heightened sensations. Which would be painful and difficult to deal with on an everyday basis. I know that this is supposed to be a fantasy but what is wrong with having a little bit of reality in our fantasy world?
I was going to try and write a funny review but this book just made me so angry that I couldn't. I will however include some of my favorite quotes and my snarky thoughts regarding them.

'"Ben & Jerry's and Ana." He says each word slowly.' --Um couldn't you waste a different kind of Ice Cream? Ben & Jerry's is the shit. Oh well at least you didn't use Cherry Garcia. That would have ruined my favorite Ice Cream for me!

"Holy fucking cow, that was so quick" -Ana--No shit, isn't it always quick for you?

"Why, oh why, have I fallen for someone who is plain crazy- beautiful, sexy as fuck, richer than Coresus, and crazy with a capital K? -Ana-- Do I really need to point out that crazy starts with a 'C' not a fucking 'K'? This must be some saying that people have. Otherwise I can't figure it out.

"Oh, someone else has problems. I'm not the only one."-Ana--no you are just a selfish fucktard who only cares about herself. Even though you know your mom is having problems do you think you call her more than once in the whole book? No.

"I think Ray is smiling on the other end of the line, but it's hard to tell. It's always hard to tell with Ray."-Ana--pretty sure it's hard to tell with everyone! I'm not sure you realize that you can't actually see the person on the other end of the phone conversation.

Really I had a ton more picked out to make fun of but I'm sick of this book and not at all in the mood to make fun of it.

*I hold nothing personal against EL James and I am happy for her success. These are my own personal opinions. They no way reflect her as a person. I'm sure she is wonderful. I just hate her main character and the horrible relationship these two people have!

Fifty Shades of Grey ~ Kami's Review

3 Stars
I have finally read this and I am not traumatized, lol. While the writing was atrocious the story was not too bad. The writing was so repetitive. My inner goddess, my subconscious, his scorching grey eyes, biting my lip, quirking his lips, blushing, flushing, etc etc. If you took out all of these phrases from the whole book, it would have made it significantly less pages. I found it incredibly annoying.

Here is a quote from a review I read on Amazon by DS from LA about how many times all these were said:Direct Link

According to my Kindle search function, characters roll their eyes 41 times, Ana bites her lip 35 times, Christian's lips "quirk up" 16 times, Christian "cocks his head to one side" 17 times, characters "purse" their lips 15 times, and characters raise their eyebrows a whopping 50 times. Add to that 80 references to Ana's anthropomorphic "subconscious" (which also rolls its eyes and purses its lips, by the way), 58 references to Ana's "inner goddess," and 92 repetitions of Ana saying some form of "oh crap" (which, depending on the severity of the circumstances, can be intensified to "holy crap," "double crap," or the ultimate "triple crap").
I have discovered that Ana says "Jeez" 81 times and "oh my" 72 times. She "blushes" or "flushes" 125 times, including 13 that are "scarlet," 6 that are "crimson," and one that is "stars and stripes red." (I can't even imagine.) Ana "peeks up" at Christian 13 times, and there are 9 references to Christian's "hooded eyes," 7 to his "long index finger," and 25 to how "hot" he is (including four recurrences of the epic declarative sentence "He's so freaking hot"). Christian's "mouth presses into a hard line" 10 times. Characters "murmur" 199 times and "whisper" 195 times (doesn't anyone just talk?), "clamber" on/in/out of things 21 times, and "smirk" 34 times. Christian and Ana also "gasp" 46 times and experience 18 "breath hitches," suggesting a need for prompt intervention by paramedics. Finally, in a remarkable bit of symmetry, our hero and heroine exchange 124 "grins" and 124 "frowns"... which, by the way, seems an awful lot of frowning for a woman who experiences "intense," "body-shattering," "delicious," "violent," "all-consuming," "turbulent," "agonizing" and "exhausting" orgasms on just about every page.

The Bad
What I really didnt like was the relationship with Grey and Ana. She is literally terrified of him. The whole book she is tense, cant relax around him, scared to say the wrong thing or do the wrong thing else she get punished. His mood swings are over the top. One minute he is all nice and loving, the next he is pissed off with "cold uncaring eyes". She is constantly walking on eggshells around him. This is not, in any way shape or form a 'healthy' relationship.
Ana is weak, and I hate that in a character. She has her moments of standing up to him, but mostly she is just nauseatingly weak. Christian basically uses word play and manipulation to get anything he wants and she is too ignorant to see it.
Grey has a major obsession with food, and making Ana eat. I wanted to stab him with a fork everytime he demanded she eat.

The Good
The emails! Really, this was the best part of the whole book. I loved the emails. Without them this book would have probably gotten 1 star.

The whole issue of him being a stalker, while valid, didnt bother me too much. I didnt think it was out of control. Some was cute. The fact that she wanted it, made it okay. He wasnt some random guy, she is madly in love with him. Maybe that is just me though, I dunno.

I will be reading the other 2 books in this trilogy, but I am not really excited about them.
Book was okay, but I am not in love with it.

Tommy Nightmare by J.L. Bryan

While Fallen Oak recovers from the Jenny pox, someone new is hunting Jenny.

Like Jenny, Ashleigh Goodling belonged to a pair of opposites with powers that mirror each other.

Now Jenny and Seth must face the opposite of love...

Lori's Review: 4.5 Stars
I fell in love with Jenny Pox. I loved her story. The first few chapters of this book are spent introducing us to Tommy and his special ability to spread fear. We learn of his horrible childhood and his troubled youth. We follow him on his quest to find Ashleigh Goodling his opposite and Esmerelda the death talker. He finds both despite Ashleigh being dead. Then the three of them hatch a plan to take down Jenny and Seth. We also meet briefly Alexander Death.
What I loved:
Jenny is even more troubled now that she has killed half the town. Her memories of her past lives does not ease her suffering. They further her resolve to never use her power. She often dreams of her ancient life in Greece. She finds not only a man who she thinks is Seth there but also Ashleigh and Tommy. There her powers are used to take down the leader of Athens by the King of Sparta (Seth?). I loved these flashbacks. They were so rich. They added to the story rather than distracted the reader from the main plot line.
Ashleigh/Darcy/Esmerelda are the same dasterdly villian we love to hate.
The ending was once again surprising and a bit unexpected. At first you think Alexander is coming for Jenny. Then we think he is coming for Esmerelda. Who he picks is not who I thought it would be. Jenny complements him and Esmerelda is his opposite. So it's a toss up until the end.
Uhh there are zombies---duh! I love zombies even if they are just briefly used.
The writing was fantastic again. Once we got into the heart and soul of the story I couldn't put it down.
What I didn't like:
Tommy's first half of the book seemed to drag for me. That is probably because I wasn't invested in his story like I was Jenny and Seth's.
Jenny and Seth seem to be growing distant in this book. I missed thier chemistry. This is the author's design though. His introduction of Alexander is really going to throw us, Jenny and Seth for a loop. Which I am looking forward to. I'm a sucker for a good love triangle.
Once again this book is not really intended for young readers. I would say the material is YA-M/Adult. Or in movie terms NC-17.

Fifty shades of Grey review *Lori's expanded Review*

"When literature student Anastasia Steele is drafted to interview the successful young entrepreneur Christian Grey for her campus magazine, she finds him attractive, enigmatic and intimidating. Convinced their meeting went badly, she tries to put Grey out of her mind - until he happens to turn up at the out-of-town hardware store where she works part-time.

The unworldly, innocent Ana is shocked to realize she wants this man, and when he warns her to keep her distance it only makes her more desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her - but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey's singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving adoptive family – Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a passionate, physical and daring affair, Ana learns more about her own dark desires, as well as the Christian Grey hidden away from public scrutiny"

Lori's Review: uhh 3Stars...I think.
I cannot even put into words how I feel about this novel. On some level I liked it (I know gross) on another level I hated it...with a passion.

I'm going to have to say that in terms of rating this book I am a realist....I felt like I was drinking piss for at least 70% of it.

Ana and Grey meet at his office when Ana gets roped (hehe) into doing an interview of him by her hot blonde sick roomie Kate. What ensues afterword can only be described as insantity!

Ana and Grey go to a restraunt for coffee and Ana decides she really likes him. Oh Bella...I mean Ana you are so freaking cute--in a I'd like kick your face way!

More events unfold. She drinks a lot of tea and fucking orange juice. They email back and forth and Grey deflowers her...from Ms. James description the bedroom must have looked something like this:

Really the best parts of this book are Grey and Ana's emails. I loved the banter. The rest was just kinda bad. In the emails we get to learn more about Mr. Grey:

and this:
and I imagine this must have been Grey in college:
only, you know solo, cause Grey is a douchebag in and of himself---he flies solo in his douchery!

I kept waiting for the really hardcore BDSM to start. I was prepared to be grossed out but mostly I was amused: Grey doesn't want to be touched specifically his chest. Why you ask? Hmm maybe because of this:
Not much happens in the way of crazy sex but he does have a "red room of pain"
which looks like this:

Grey pushes Ana's limits even though she asks for it? Is that really pushing them? Idk but anyway I haven't even started the 2nd or 3rd book but I know this is how Grey and Ana will end up!
Her head up his ass and upside down (cause they are kinky) forever....for-EV-ER

Last night I kept wondering why Ms. James just stuck with Twilight and erotica for inspriation, why not be like Cassandra Clare and pull from more than that? Then I started thinking about what would make this book AWESOME!!! My very strange brain decided that the only other literary source that could save this book is Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Ana would be a lot more understandable if she was fucked up 50 shades till sunday....at least she would have a good excuse for being a moron!

mmm....Orange Juice:
*This review was done to be fun. I hold nothing against EL James and wish her continued success. This book was like crack! I will read another book if EL puts one out.

Reign of Blood ~ By Alexia Purdy

Never tease anything that wants to eat you. My name is April Tate and my blood is the new gold. Vampires and hybrids have overrun my world, once vibrant with life, but now a graveyard of death shrouded in shadows. I fight to survive; I fight for my mother and brother. The journey is full of turns that I am quite unprepared for. And I'm just hoping to make it to the next Vegas sunrise..."

In a post-apocalyptic world, a viral epidemic has wiped out most of the earth’s population, leaving behind few humans but untold numbers of mutated vampires. April is a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in the remains of Las Vegas one year after the outbreak. She has become a ferocious vampire killer and after her family is abducted, she goes searching for them. What she finds is a new breed of vampire, unlike any she has seen before. Unsure of whom she can trust, she discovers that her view of the world is not as black and white as she once thought, and she's willing to bend the rules to rescue her family. But in trying to save them, she may only succeed in bringing her fragile world crashing down around her.

Kami's Review: 4 Stars
April, her mother, and her brother Jeremy are the only humans living in a desolate post apocalyptic world where a virus has ravaged the population killing some while mutating others into feral vampire creatures. Her family has escaped the chaos into the mountains in a bunker run off solar energy. They travel into the city during the daylight hours to avoid run-ins with the ferals, gathering supplies to survive. April and her mother have turned into ferocious vampire killers in order to survive in this new savage world. When April's mother and brother are kidnapped in broad daylight April is at a loss of what to do. She is torn apart at the loss of her family and goes on a feral killing spree to sate her hunger for revenge. While searching for her family she stumbles upon a creature who is neither human nor feral but some hybrid. The hybrids can walk outside on cloudy days and can handle limited amounts of direct sunlight. Mirand who is the 1st hybrird that she meets takes April back to their 'bunker' to meet the leader of the hybrids. Although April is scared out of her mind she knows that these hybrids are not like the ferals that roam the earth, and she knows that she must get their help if she wants any chance to rescue her family. Not all hybrids are as accepting of a human as the leader of the clan, Blaze, is. It turns out though that April is not a mere human afterall, but a different kind of hybrid, one without the limitations of the others. April and her new 'friends' prepare for the battle that is sure to come to resuce her family.

I wont lie, it took me almost 35% into this book before I really got into it. She was all alone for that part of the book and I got really bored reading her thoughts and descriptions of everything. I need that dialogue with characters, that is what makes me love certain characters, and get to really know them. After I made it through that 1st part things really picked up. I have said it a million times, I am a sucker for a a bad ass chick. April could literally have bad ass tattooed on her forehead she kicks so much ass. I loved her personality and her drive to never give up. It dont matter the situation, or how outnumbered she might be, she wont lay down, she will go down fighting or not at all.

Blaze and Miranda were cool, but we didnt really get a lot of talk time with them, so I didnt feel as connected to them as I did to April and Rye. Rye was great of course. Cant have a love interest be lame. Dont know if this book was considered YA or not, but I would have really liked to have at least 1 good sex scene, but maybe thats just me, oh well.

Will I recommend this book? Yes
Will I read it again? Maybe
Will I read next in series? I dunno if this is even a series, but kinda seems like maybe we will get another book....? If there is another book to be written I will definately read it.

Lori's Review: 4 Stars
This was a good book. The first 10% is a little slow moving as we get to know April. The rest of the book is gripping as April fights off rabid vampires or Zompires as they seem to be a mix of both. When she meets the hybrid vampires she learns more about herself and learns that not all vampires are evil.
What I liked:
April was a good lead character. She was tough but had enough vulnerability to be believable. Ryes was a good match for her and although they suffer from what Author Rhiannon Frater calls insta-love/destined to be mated syndrome that is found in so many YA books these days. This is isn't quite as bad as Twilight because it's not drug out for pages and books on end. It's also not the main and only point of the book. As a matter fact it barely comes into play. Maybe mentioned 2 or 3 times which makes me wonder if this is going to be a series rather than a stand alone novel. The writing was good and the author gives great descriptions of dead Las Vegas, the zompires and the hybrids.

I loved Ryes. I know I know I just complained about the insta-love and I am suffering from it myself. What can I say I'm a girl who likes blood, gore and romance!!!
What I didn't like:
Insta-Love. I love a good love story but sometimes I just wish the characters could just have a 'normal' courtship. And really I think that they will have a more normal relationship than alot of relationships in book world. I think April is the kind to take it slow.
Everything was just a little to easy for April. It was like the author would write herself into a corner and then was like 'oh yeah by the way april has this special skill that she knew before that I forgot to mention' or 'oh yeah by the way April knows how to do such and such because she was never a normal teenager'. I know I'm not explaining it well but you'd know what I am talking about if you read the book. It's not horrible as it seems. This appears to be a starter novel and we will keep learning more about April.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and will recommend it to others and perhaps even reread it someday. If a sequel does come out I will read it.

**I messaged Alexia Purdy on facebook and she says she is planning this as an ongoing series and the next book should be due out later this year/early next year. Guess who is lining up for an ARC of that? That's right me!!!! Squee I love it when an author gives me more of the characters I love!!!

What's a little "Fifty Shades of Grey" between 2 friends?

The Best Part of Fifty Shades of Grey was making fun of it with my friend/fellow reviewer Kami! Here's some of our thoughts on the stupidness of this book:

*Note from Kami, I ended up switching from a paperback copy to an ebook copy around p70 (paperback) and as it turns out the page numbers from paperback and ebook do not match up directly. So I apologize if this causes any confusion.*
*so you broke down and bought it huh?~Lori
"She'll [kate] make an exceptional journalist. She's articulate, strong, persuassive, argumentative, beautiful--and she's my dearest, dearest friend."pg.2 I think someone has a girl crush!

"I prefer my own company." ~Ana pg.4. What a cowinkydink I would prefer having needles shoved into my skin to your company ~Lori

But if you work so hard, what do you do to chill out? pg6
LMFAO--Awkward--when was the last time YOU heard someone say 'chill out'....dear Ana I think you forgot to leave the 90s behind! ~Lori

You, fascinated by a man? That's a first. (kate) snorts. pg.14
That's cuz she's lezzie for you Kate duh! ~Lori

We are besieged by do-it yourselfers wanting to spruce up their homes. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton and John and Patrick-the two other partimers-and I are besieged by customers. pg16
Huh are you besieged? Look at all the ands in that sentence...someone needs to buy a thesarus and a new editor. ~Lori

"Am I funny? Funny looking?" [Ana]pg. 18. Hmm let's---Hello no! Hell yes!!!

I swear to god if she blushes one more I'm going to plunge a screw driver in my eyeball! It'd be less painful than being in Ana's brain. ~ Lori
"I must be the color of The Communist Manifesto." [Ana]pg.19--Good god woman (Ms. James) I'm pretty sure Ana is a more nefarious character than any communists. Please stop comparing your character to well written works. Marx is rolling in his grave. As are the Bronte sisters and Jane Austen.

"I'm in the street, and Christian Grey is holding my hand." pg.28 OH MY FUCKING GOD---this girl is a moron.
"Try to be cool, Ana." pg.29--too late I'm pretty sure the cool train didn't even stop for you fucktard! ~Lori

I can almost hear his sphinxlike smile through the phone p35
I am really curious what a sphinxlike smile looks like, and sounds like through a phone... ~Kami

I dont think it is normal for someone to 'flush' and 'blush' this much. Maybe she should have that checked out. ~Kami

I flush at the waywardness of my subconscious-- she's doing her happy dance in a bright red hula skirt at the thought of being his. p67
Compared to Anastasia's subconscious, mine is awfully boring. She doesn't yell at me, glare at me, tap her foot at me, or dance in a hula skirt. She don't even wear glasses. ~Kami
I always figured her Inner Goddess to be more of the dancing type. Her subconscious is a bitch. ~Lori
Wouldn't it be awesome if she stopped fucking yapping about her inner goddess and subconscious, got some fucking guts stood up for herself, stopped being an annoying blathering idiot and got some god forsaken fucking confidence!? ~Lori (yes I realize that is a massive run on sentence--but if EL James can get away with it--well damnit I can to!)
*Switches to ebook pages *~Kami
Your a sadist?
Im a Dominant. pg72
This is a play on words. This would be manipulation. ~Kami
LOL so are brown eyes. ~Lori

So you'll get your kicks by exerting your will over me. {Ana}
It's about gaining your trust and your respect, so you'll let me exert my will over you. I will gain a great deal of pleasure, joy even, in your submission. The more you submit, the greater my joy--it's a very simple equation. {Grey} pg73
Another play on words. Yes, dear naive, Ana you nailed it on the head. ~Kami
In other words he doesn't give a shit if you get any joy or not! As a matter of fact he would like to beat you when you are "bad". Nice man. I bet he's glad you are a fucking idiot and don't understand fancy words---wait there are no fancy words there. ~Lori

Will you hurt me? [Ana]
What do you mean? [Grey]
Physically, will you hurt me? [Ana]
I will punish you when you require it, and it will be painful. [Grey] pg76
Play on words. Simply answer, yes he will hurt you. ~Kami
Yippee sign me up motherfucker!!! Sounds like a good time to me. *Rolls eyes/Sarcasm*--uh oh better run and hide--Grey might come after me with his 'itchy palms' and spank me for rolling my eyes.~Lori

We're going to rectify the situation right now. [Grey]
What do you mean? What situation? [Ana]
Your situation. Ana I'm going to make love to you, now. [Grey] pg81
Clearly being a virgin is a situation. How dare she! ~Kami
Oh that Ana. Wait, What? I thought Grey only fucked? tehehehehe ~Lori
*Ana has an orgasm her very first time-start to finish this sex act cannot last longer than 10 mins-not even close to enough time for the pain of losing her v-card to stop.~Lori
I want you sore, baby. pg88
Say what?!?! ~Kami
Nice! Me too but in a I'm- going- to- punch- your- face- because- you're- an- idiot sort of way! ~Lori

"I'm 50 Shades of fucked up". -Grey pg IDFK
Yes, yes you are. And you're a manipulative asshole too. AND I still like your character better than Ana. ~Lori

I really don't understand the appeal of the sex in this book. By my estimation Christian is a 2-5 minute man, and Ana has some sort of nerve disease because she "comes" on command. ~Lori

Everytime I see Ana think "oh my" George Takei pops into my head! ~Lori

If Ana's Subconcious and Inner Goddess would shut the fuck up this book might be 50% more enjoyable. pg. ALL OF THEM ~Lori

"Christian stands in the doorway, his PJs hanging off his hips in that way that makes every little cell in my body stand up and take notice" pg 262--what the hell is this girl talking about? Everytime I read this I envision ->

"He laughs, and I get a rare glimpse of carefree Christian. I've not seen him for awhile" pg. 263. Apparently the joking around you were doing with him in the car not a half an hour earlier was like too long for your stupid brain to remember. ~Lori

"Fuck, this is sexier than the toothbrush". Ana pg.264 LMFAO--uh yeah...toothbrushes aren't meant to be sexy you nimrod. And sharing a toothbrush is just nasty!

Why, everytime they go into the red room of pain, do I picture Grey as this? ~Lori

Also the way the writer protrays Jose I'm fairly certain she has never met a real Mexican...Dios Mio!~Lori

The Tampon...OMG the tampon!!!!!

Do you think Grey saved it and made Ana a gift?
Really this blog post could be endless but I think I will leave you with this lasting image to scar you for life!

Tomorrow Land by Mari Mancusi

Imagine finding your first love, only to be ripped apart by the apocalypse. Peyton Anderson will never forget the day she was forced to make a choice--between her family--and Chris Parker, the boy she'd given her heart. Now, four years later, as she steps from the fallout shelter and into a dead and broken world, he's the only thing on her mind.

All Chris "Chase" Parker wanted was to take Peyton away and keep her safe from harm. But he waited for hours in the rain on judgment day and she never showed--breaking his heart without ever telling him why.

Now the two of them have been thrown together once again, reluctant chaperones to a group of orphan children in a post-apocalyptic world where the dead still walk...and feed. As they begin their pilgramage to the last human outpost on Earth, can they find a way to let go of old hurts and find the love they lost--all while attempting to save what's left of the human race?

Lori's Review: 4 Stars
I loved this book. It was a very different take on the Z-Poc. The zombies were fresh and not the standard zom. Which can be a good thing or a bad thing. Peyton is more badass than a lot of heroines out there in book land. She is unrealistically badass. Her dad was a scientist and gave her an upgrade to make her the perfect weapon for fighting the zombies. Peyton and Chirs (Chase) have wonderful chemistry. Unlike other books in this genre they are slow to trust each other and fall in love...even though they were in love before the zpoc.
This book doesn't have enough action for my tastes but It might be just right for someone getting into the Zombie genre.
It's well written and engaging and definately worth your money! The ending was very unexpected which is a good thing for me. I am not surprised by books often.

Kami's Review: 4 Stars
I was a bit leary going into this book. The description kinda screamed angsty teenage love story, something I really dont have patience for.
However I was pleasantly surprised!
This was a great read, I really loved the story, and the characters. In my opinion it was a different twist on zombies, at least of the zombie books I have read.
At first the back and forth through time put me off, but since it wasnt several different people, it was easy to follow, and I am glad now that we got more of a backstory rather than jumping right into the end of the world shit with no idea how it really came about.
The twist at the end was good. I have no idea why I didnt see that one coming, but I didnt, so it was a nice surprise to not actually guess the ending, LOL.
Overall a good zombie book for all you zombie lovers out there. Thanks Lori for recommending this book!

Will I recommend this book? Yes
Will I read this book again? Maybe

Sunrise by: Kody Boye

They said the world would end in 2012.

They never said it would end like this.

Dakota Travis and his neighbor Steve Earnest have been hiding out in a fortified apartment in the month following the zombie apocalypse, but when a rogue gang uproots them and chance brings one of its members into their midst, there is little the two of them can do but run.

They find sanctuary in a converted asylum with members of the United States Army, and while things seem to be safer than before, an underlying strain of tension begins to rule their lives as Sergeant Armstrong, leader of the small military troop, begins to succumb to insanity, while Dakota slowly begins to find himself becoming attracted to one of the sergeant’s men, a sin that not only transcends traditional military policy, but the moral boundaries of happiness after tragedy terrible enough to destroy the entire world.

In a world of the undead, the fierce, the savage and the unthinkable, who can hope to survive one final sunrise?

Lori's Review: 5 Stars
Sunrise follows the story of a young man on a journey to out run zombies and save his life. Dakota is holed up in an apartment with his best friend Steve. The men are forced from their safe haven by a gang. They travel many miles and avoid and kill zombies along the way. Dakota also finds love and a family he never had.
What I liked:
It was beautifully written.
Dakota is a very likeable MC. He's not like most zombie novel heroes. He's not a badass super hero. He's just a regular guy that knows how to shoot a gun and run for his life. He's not tough as nails nothing can break me type of guy. I LOVE that about him. He is a guy I can relate too. Although I am sure I would have peed my pants in a lot of the situations these guys got themselves into.
Steve is an amazing guy and anyone would love to have him as a bestfriend.
Kody Boye knows how to write vulnerability. He really gets the human condition. In most end of the world novels we don't see the hero cry ever. Dakota sheds lots of tears. Over big and sometimes little things. I respect that Kody included this. He opened himself and his charcter to be viewed as weak because his gay character cries. Don't think I am being harsh. I am not. I live in a small redneck town in Iowa. I see and hear enough comments to know that gays are no where close to being completely accepted. Hell, I'm not even sure if some people around here have even heard of the civil rights movement.
There were moments of humor in this work. They were very subtle and not all readers might catch onto them. There are moments that will break your heart. There are moments that will make you jump up and go YEAH!!!!!
Jamie--sigh. He's a guy any girl (or gay man) can fall in love with. Oh did I mention that the MC is gay? I did? It doesn't matter to me at all. This is a book about finding love and hanging on to life no matter the odds. When others turn to raiding, killing, and taking--these guys are about helping everyone and just finding joy in a dead world.
What some readers might not like:
Do not going into this book expecting a horror novel. It is not. It's a survival novel. There are zombies but they are just a situation that the characters must evolve and move around. THEY are not the stars of this story. LOVE and LIFE are. I am so glad I decided to read this book. It has gotten me out of my book slump and back on track. What a fantastic novel. I cannot gush enough! Kody Boye is an author that I will keep my eyes on in the future.

Kami's Review: 4 Stars
It took me a while to get into this book. I cant even really pinpoint why, but it did. I would say halfway through I started really getting into it, and felt that connection with the characters. Overall it was a pretty decent zombie novel. There was not as much violence, gore, and action in this book as there are in most zombie novels. However I read the author note at the beginning of the book and he stated that this wasnt written as a traditional zombie novel per se, but it was written for the gay community. So while some may be upset at the lack of killings, I was not. This was a very heartfelt book. The author didnt hold feelings back, he put it all out there in the pages of his book. I enjoyed that honesty.

Death Week ~ Death Weeps Lori's Review

5 super HUGE STARS:

Caleb faces possible jail time for using Clyde as a undeadly weapon. When he's exonerated with probation lasting a year, Caleb has to watch his every action. Tensions run high when after the death of Jade's only relatives, she must live with an undesirable foster family who are anything but what they seem....

Life gets complicated for everyone when the scientists responsible for the paranormal manifestation threaten a parellel world to Caleb's own. In a bid to stop the destruction of their world, while saving his own, Caleb must defend two peoples against the long arm of the Graysheets.

Time begins to run against him when he discovers through an unlikely source that his friends have been given a drug that causes progressive insanity. Can he find the antidote in time to save them? To save Jade?

It's no surprise that I love Tamara Rose Blodgett's Death Series. Before this book I didn't think my love for her could get any more profound and deep. I was wrong. I have the biggest author crush on her. Is that even a real thing? Well it is now.
This book was masterfully done. Caleb and crew certainly grew up ALOT in this one. The one lines and snark are still there in spades. However, Caleb is learning the real consequences of his actions. Not just from his court case and probation but from some problems that arise between himself and a certain member of the group. As Caleb says later in the book "Complications, Complications the story of my life".

Tamara-you almost gave me a heartattack toward the end of the book with all the crap you did to Gramps. I was like oh, no, she isn't going to kill my favorite character!

Even know I knew it was coming the cameo by the Savage folks was awesome. I was surprised to see that it felt more rounded and expanded in this book. Probably because I knew both sides of the story. Reading the Savage series will help your understanding of the "Dome" world but it is not necessary. Tamara is a supremely talented writer and she gives the reader just enough background and information to understand what the heck is going on. Think of this as a teaser for one of her other beautiful worlds (that I am also completely in love with).
Now to the man of the hour. CLYDE!!!! Clyde was present in a big way in this book. Honestly half the characters would not be alive if not for his supremeo awesome awesomesauce! Take a look:
"Master," Clyde breathed. My *spoiler*, my zombie.
My friend.
He turned his head to the side and a very human emotion stood there
Fear and grief, mingled in a bitter pill of stark realization.
"Save her" he begged.
I grabed *spoiler's* small hand and felt death on the edges of her. I could taste it.
I took some of the life I'd given Clyde and siphoned it off him for *spoiler*. As she bloomed like a flower, his spark faded.
The action is BIG TIME in this novel and it showcases Tamara's beautiful writing style perfectly. CLYDE owned the show. I'm not kidding even Caleb acknowledges this "I smiled at Clyde, he got shit done". Yes, Yes he does. This book is simply amazing. If you are one of those people that doesn't like/trust glowing 5 star reviews---well it is simply impossible to dumb this book down to 3 stars. Sorry I cannot do that, nor do I want to, nor will I ever! You cannot make me.
Now to compose a super stalkerish love letter to Tamara---kidding---I already sent one of those months ago!

Death Week ~ Death Weeps Kami's Review

5 Stars

This book starts after Caleb is arrested for using his zombies as weapons, he got off with probation. Dealing with all the problems of his trial and the tension it causes all those he loves is not the only problems he and his crew are facing this book. The greysheets are doing their best to take him out, but they are not going at it too his face like they have before, this time it is much more sneaky and deadly to those he loves. His heart is in jeapordy as well. There is only so much Caleb can take before he loses it completely.

You would think being 27 and a mother of 3 would make a book like this seem too juvenile, but its really not. These kids face challenges and trials daily that most adults couldnt handle. The humor and attitudes of these kids are what I love most. I have never laughed as much reading a book as I do reading the books in this series. These kids crack me up. I make sure I read these books when I am alone or with family who dont care that I am crying cuz I am laughing so hard over a book.

I do recommend that you read Tamara's Savage series otherwise you might not understand completly a few parts of the book where the kids do some travelling to another parallel world. The world is very unique with the different species of humans you will read about. You will grasp the concept of course, so dont worry there, but for full understanding read the other series too.

As always Tamara's writing is excellent, I dont even remember finding a spelling mistake which I almost always notice while reading. The way she has weaved these two worlds together(from 2 of her book series) is amazing. She pulled off what many could not. Tamara you rock!!

I tend to ramble a lot and bounce around a bit so bear with me. There was no shortage of action, humor, mystery, and love in this book so no disappointment there. Gale and Clydes relationship is one of a kind, and I love reading about the attraction and love these 2 feel for eachother.
****SPOILER****I cried when Clyde 'died' again. I am a baby I know. I really hope he comes back to 'life' in the next book.****END SPOILER****

Poor Jade has more struggles going into this book. After all that girl has gone through I had hoped she would get some downtime to renew herself, but we may have to wait for the next book for that. There was a time in this book that I did not like her. I know she wasnt herself due to what the greysheets were doing, so I tried to cut her some slack, LOL.

We have all the old enemies do deal with, plus some new ones. A lot of lingering questions were explained in this book, and yet we are still left with tons question for the next book. Then we have those who we are not quite sure if we can trust, like Brett. After the life transference that happened with Brett and Jade in the last book, we all wondered how that would effect them, lets just say more than we could have guessed. Brett while nicer, and less of a douch in this book, is still a jerk IMO. ****SPOILER****I was sad that he died, however it was a necessary death otherwise Jade would not be able to be herself again, and her and Caleb would not be able to be together.****END SPOILER****
Then there is Parker. He was a bad guy, then kinda a good guy helping out, then bad, then okay, but this book clears all that up. And we get yet another startling revelation about who he really is.

The only thing that I disliked about this book was that
****SPOILER****the Zondorae brother and Howie were not killed when they had the chance. Yes letting the brothers live the 1st time turned out to be both a good and a bad thing since they needed their blood to cure everyone, but after all the awful things they did in the Savage world they really should have been killed, they are too dangerous to let live as was proven since they kidnapped Parker and got Brett killed, and Clyde back to 'dead' zombie status. Then Howie, this guy is way to dangerous to let live, not just to the crew, but to everyone! I am sure they serve a purpose in the next books, but I hate them so much I wanted them dead now. *sigh* ****END SPOILER****
Would I recommend this book? Absolutly! To everyone of all ages!
Will I read this book again? Oh yes I will
Will I read the next book in series? Yes! I cant wait!

I've finished Death Weeps

I'm done!!!! Finally!!! Life kept getting in the way of my reading. LOL. Review tomorrow. Now to wrap my head around the awesomeness of this book and write a killer review.

A note about the blog

This is me and my beautiful baby. She is awesome and watches Dora while I am reading! She will be 2 on June 18th. Can count to 11 in English and 10 in Spanish. She also knows all the words to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Trust me I am surprised when she starts singing songs and speaking Spanish. These are things she picks up on her own. Enough of my gushing mommy-ness and onto the important stuff.

I want to address a couple of things about the blog today. First off the star rating system. We use the goodreads 1-5 star system. 1 being horrid and 5 being amazing. I am extremely generous with my reviews. There is very little out there that I do not enjoy reading. I also am not comfortable giving less than 3 stars. Nor will you see many non 4 or 5 star books here. The blog is about what I am digging... If I am hating something it won't be here. However, if Kami loves it I will post it. The exceptions will be extremely popular books that I review because I am invested in the series or I want to figure out what the fuss is about.
The second thing is the content of the blog itself. Kami and I are in our **cough** late 20's. I'm a year older. We both read quite a bit of Young Adult fiction. But do not exclusively read that. Hence the erotica. Not everything we read or say is intended or meant for young readers.
Ok now that is out of the way. Have a wonderful day. I am almost finished with Death Weeps. I will review it tomorrow.
On Thursday and Friday I will review a couple of other books as well as post the the cover and blurbs of the next two Death books. These are not cover reveals. Tamara already has them up on her blog. I am not an important enough blogger to get that kind of exclusive. LOL. However, since it is death week I feel the need to cover all of the series.
If you are hooked on Tamara's work like I am you should check out her blog, facebook and goodreads page. I promise she is super duper cool and a real sweetie. If you friend request her she will accept and if you have any questions or just want to tell you how awesome she is she will respond.
Anyway the blog:

Death Week-- Death Screams

Caleb's second year of high school starts off without a hitch until Jade touches the wrong clairvoyance sample that foretells a murder in her future. Will she remain safe even while assisting police officers Garcia and Gale in a race to prevent a cataclysmic death?

Sophie and Jonesy aren't seeing things eye to eye, but when her safety is threatened by an attacker targeting Astral-Projection girls, they put their differences aside. The FDA approved depressant has begun to be administered to the teens for suppression of paranormal abilities during sleep for safety reasons. Or so they've been told.

Carson and Brett have escalated the violence that they perpetrate and leave Caleb no choice but to reciprocate. After saving the newest member of their group from certain abuse, Caleb knows the bull's-eye is dead center on him. Again.

Does Caleb use the undead as a weapon of defense while his group hangs in the balance of imminent peril?

Lori's Review: 5 Stars
I devoured this book today. I'm still totally geeking out about this series. Caleb and crew just keep getting better and better at (mis)managing thier mishcheif. I CANNOT wait to read the 4th book. I love the banter, I still love Jonesy and Tiff (gum smacking included). OMG when Jonesy's baby sister barfed/puked at Thanksgiving...I haven't laughed that hard while reading a book in a long time!!! I think Caleb is going to have a lot of issues to address in the next book and I can't wait to see how he and his gang handle the fallout of all of thier previous and new adventures!!
Gramps definately cements himself as a member of the gang in this book. What a character! I love him more than I love Jonesy. It's close but Gramps definately pulls into the lead in this book.
People who are seen as enemies in this book start looking more like allies. All the gang seems to grow in this book. They are still young and learning how to deal with their extra ablities. It's definately a lot of pressure on Caleb.

Kami's Review: 5 Stars
Oh what an ending!! How could you leave us hanging like that?
So yeah, when is the next book coming out? :)

I love this series. This book is the 3rd instalment of the Death Series. A lot of open ends come to conclusions, and then we are left with just as many questions all over again. The end is such a cliff hanger, grrr. I can't wait for the next book. This series makes me laugh more than any other books I have read, and Death Screams did not dissappoint on that. I am 26 with 3 kids of my own and I love this series. If you have a teenage boy who is not all that into reading, this series just might catch his eye. I recommend this series for all ages, and genders however.
