Bloggers Love Bloggers Blog Tour!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you to Frankie Rose for the tour banner. And to Tamara Beard for organizing this tour!

Today on the blog we have Ren from A little bit of R n R.

This is Ren, say Hi to Ren Friends.
So without further ado...it's Ren Reidy, bitch.

LP: Why did you decide to start book blogging?

Ren:  At the time, I was reading 3-4 books a week. I have such a love for books that I felt the need to share them with the reading community. I didn’t even care if anyone read them. I just wanted to get them out there. I blog mostly about indie authors. I feel like they need the exposure and I’m more than happy to give that to them.

Will they find a way to send Julia home before it’s too late? Or will Julia’s body and mind be trapped THERE?

Lori's Thoughts:

Julia is stuck in an alternate universe and on the run from the UR. Her and her two boyfriends Reece, and Evan go on a wild ride and pick up the super awesome kickass Jo.

Review: Blood Singers by Tamara Rose Blodgett

Blood Singers (Blood, #1)
 A sub-species of human beings...

Twenty-year old Julia Wade, a young woman tragically widowed, is in the middle of a bizarre bid between two mythical species who are vying for the unique properties she offers; her blood. The vampires need her to balance the food load of the human species and give them their coveted “Lightwalkers.” The Were wish to be moonless changers; a Rare One can make that a reality.

Julia wants to belong to herself.

Can she free herself and begin a new life?

I know that you have all heard about Tamara Rose Blodgett by now. And if you haven't, then no excuses! Check out Lori's interview with the amazing Indie author, here.

This is my first experience with Blodgett's writing. *Oh, the shame! I'll be reading more! I promise!* Some of the first things I noticed were the hopping between past/present, as well as POV. I found that I actually really liked it! It lures you along, giving small details. You start off rooting for Julia, the MC, then you find yourself relating with the vamps, and then finally get a peek into the Weres, and the singers, as well as a small dip into the police investigating the whole thing. Who do I cheer for?!?! It jerks your feelings and loyalties all over the place, and it was entirely unpredictable. Loved it.

This does lead to one little problem though. The cheese factor. I was constantly flipping the page to find someone else who wanted Julia all for themselves. While a little redundant, it did lead to an exciting climax! *No way! I won't tell you how it ends!*

Blodgett's style does take some getting used to, but I have to say that I absolutely adored her graphic metaphors and similes. It gives the reader a very clear picture to run with. The characters are each unique, with distinct personalities and voices. This carries over to their dialogue, which is believable and great fun. I do wish that the whole thing had gone through one more round of edits, just to add clarity to some sections, but I won't ever judge a book solely on that.

In the end, based purely on entertainment value, I give it a solid four stars. Even when I would put it down for the night, it would call to me, urging me to read just one more chapter. Just as the sequel calls to me now...

The fort has grown crowded as survivors of the zombie apocalypse have found safety between its walls.  Winter is coming; soon it will be too cold to live in tents and other makeshift shelters.  The leaders of the survivors—Katie, Jenni, Juan, Travis, and Nerit—decide it’s time for an assault on the zombie-occupied hotel that looms over the town square.
A pitched battle in the banquet room is the start of a harrowing, room-by-room struggle from Reception to roof.  As the sun sets, the people of Ashley Oaks gather in the hotel’s rooftop ballroom and gazebo to celebrate their survival.  Gazing out over the beauty of the surrounding Texas countryside, it’s hard to believe that death and danger lurk around every corner.
The fort’s search and rescue teams have attracted unwanted attention from bandits who see the fort as competition for food . . . and as a ready source of women.  The first attacks are minor, but everyone knows there is worse to come.
And beyond the fort’s walls, the zombies shamble, moaning, eyes fastened hungrily upon the living.

Update on the blog....

....and why it seems slow around here. I would love to blame it on my super busy life like I have in the past, but that's not really an excuse anymore. I've been going through a reading funk lately. It's not fun.
I'm also writing a book. It's actually a lot of fun, and as much hard work as I knew it would be. My intentions are to release it to the public at some point in time. I might turn it into a serial here on the blog, or I may publish it for kindle. I just don't know. What I do know is that I would feel like a huge hypocrite to not have the guts to publish for fear of bad reviews, when I spend a lot of my time reviewing other, more braver souls books. I also know that I will not put out anything that is not the best it can be. That being said it will be a while. I will have it extensively edited and also beta read by as many people as I can get to look at it. I will release a blurb in the near future. As you can see by the side bar it's still a wee baby of a book. It's got a long way to go. Don't be surprised if it takes me the rest of the year to get this bad boy out. I'm excited and nervous. So far, the one person who is reading it likes it (at least that's what she says) so I'm hoping others will too.

I'm planning on doing some giveaways here soon. So keep coming back. I've got some Disarming by Alexia Purdy bookmarks to giveaway, and I am occasionally popping up on the facebook page and doing kindle book giveaways. I <3 you all.

Review: Prophecy Girl by Faith McKay

Prophecy Girl (Lacuna Valley, #1)

Prophecy Girl
by Faith McKay

Ever since Samantha Winthrop's mother moved them to Lacuna Valley, supposedly in search of better weather, the list of strange questions she has no answers for has been growing out of control.
Does her little sister, Violet, have the ability to make things happen just by "praying" for them? Are Sam's dreams really predicting the future? Is she destined to marry the boy she just met, and what is the mysterious orb that he's guarding? Why does she get the impression that there are dangerous creatures watching from the woods?

While Sam should be focusing on answering those questions, there is one other that makes them seem almost irrelevant: Is her mother planning on killing her and Violet?

Synopsis from Goodreads

"The more she knew about all of this, the more she came to realize that ignorance really was bliss, but the monsters would still kill you just the same."

I am entirely on the fence about this book. On the one hand, the writing style is easy to fall in love with. It is so smooth it just rolls off the tongue. It draws you in and pulls you along.
The plot is complex and unpredictable. I have no idea where this story in heading, but I look forward to reading it! It is unlike any other other paranormal book I have read, and that makes it simply refreshing. This is just book one, and I can already see the enormity of it all. It's a huge undertaking, and I applaud McKay's venture.
And since I know that some people have issues with reading Indie books due to editing issues, you will be comforted to know that this is cleanly done. Only minor issues.
The issues that I did have with the book were simple. The ages of the characters simply didn't mesh with their behavior at times. Violet, our MC's younger sister, is supposed to be nine, but I can't help but envision her as being six or seven. Samantha, *Sam*, is 16. She's counting down the days to her escape, but there were moments at the beginning of the book that I felt she was acting a little further away from adulthood.
On the plus side, Sam, and her inevitable love interest Nick, mature throughout the story, making their sexual tension a little less awkward, and their dialogue is very well done. They really did grow on me.
As a quick side note, I found it strange that vegetarianism randomly sneaked into this story, and was described as not being a popular choice, and that people felt threatened by it. I just wanted to point out that it is, in fact, growing in popularity, with 7.3 million Americans living the lifestyle. There are 400 million vegetarians worldwide, and I don't know a single person who is threatened by vegetables.
Except brussel sprouts.
Those bitches are deadly.

Copy of the book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

The "Making you work for it" Giveaway

So, as usual, I made a New Year's resolution. No, it wasn't to eat healthier (though it probably should have been), and it wasn't to get more exercise (because I needed something that I would actually DO! Nobody wants to feel like a failure, and really, that's all resolutions do, right?) Instead, I made a resolution to read more Indie books. I love the dedication of Indie authors, their passion, and uniqueness. So why not read more of them, and support their relentless hard work.
But I wanted to do more than that. I wanted to share the experience with others. And the best way to do that is to offer a prize!! Yup. I said it. I have created a challenge for those of you who want to join in. It is currently highlighted on my Goodreads book club homepage. Join in the group, with no expectations, and you're free to join the challenge.  CHALLENGE YOURSELF! There are a few different levels you can try for.

Easy: 5-9 books
Medium: 10-19
Hard: 20-29
Uber-Hard: 30+

If you reach your easy goal, you get one entry. Medium is 2, Hard is 3, Uber-Hard is 4.
If you sign up for Uber-Hard and reach your goal, I'll throw in a bonus entry for every 10 books you read over the initial 30.
The prize? $10 Amazon gift card. Lame, because I'm broke. I mean... WOO HOO! Hot Damn I can buy a lot of Indie books with $10!!!!!!!!!

 FEATURE:
Disarming (Reign of Blood #2) Teaser #1
Testing out my fingers, I slowly curled them into my palms, making sure it wasn’t obvious enough for Miss Dictatorship to notice. If I could gain control of my body before getting thrown into the cell, maybe I’d have a chance against whatever was lurking in there. The sedative was strong and made me question what sort of heaping dose they had given me. I hoped I would get a separate cell and discover they had been joking all along. Come on body, wake up!
“No, not that one! Put her in the cell with him.” The woman’s voice hissed. She sounded upset but I was pretty sure it wasn’t completely my fault. “I brought you a little snack.”
This was not going to be pleasant.

Disarming (Reign of Blood #2) Teaser #2
In the distance, the snarls and moans of the feral vampires filled the air as they descended from their daylight tombs. It sent a different kind of shiver down my spine as I concentrated on breathing deeply, attempting to slow my frantic heartbeat down. It was unnerving, sleeping in the middle of the city, surrounded by fangs and death. I hated this and doubted I would get much sleep tonight, if any. I’d just have to do without.
“Going to be a long night, try to sleep some.” Rye’s voice was soft, but it did nothing to soothe my nerves. The chair creaked with his weight as he came to sit near me.
“Okay.”
Disarming (Reign of Blood #2) Teaser #3
Before long, I could hear it coming. One scrawny straggler, inching its way toward me like a tiger focused on prey. I must have looked incredibly savory, for it ignored the beaming lights blinding its searing red eyes and headed right toward me. For a half-starved beast, it was incredibly fast, its body looking bony and malnourished. A growl snarled through its withered lips, exposing rotting teeth and fangs. I took a quick step back before arching my sword right across its neck, sending its head tumbling and spraying ink-black blood across the cracked, muddy floor. Its body was left to twitch its last moments away near my feet. I dodged the puddle it had created near me and crept farther down the walls of the silent casino.
One down, how many more to go?

Disarming (Reign of Blood #2) Teaser #4
The woman, or girl—he wasn’t quite sure for he hadn’t asked her what her age was, though it seemed pretty certain that she was in her late teens, maybe early twenties—made her way in easily. She slipped quietly into the rear of one of the main greenhouses. It was lit up in there like twilight all night long with the full spectrum of light slowly growing as daybreak came. It was sufficient to see a lot of the floor, though the foliage and abundance of greenery would be sufficient to hide her for a while. Elijah knew she had figured this out and was now weaving her way through jagged rows of saplings, fruit and eucalyptus trees. Her black clothing hid her enough that no one noticed the svelte woman dodging people, sticking to the shadows and snapping quick, concise pictures of everything she saw.
She’s studying us.
Elijah shook his head, amused by this revelation. Of all things, this human was studying other humans! Ha! But what for? What did she want to do with those pictures? Why didn’t she just waltz right up to the door and introduce herself? She was definitely human and might have been welcomed.
Or maybe not. He frowned. Katrina was volatile and could decide she was a threat to the city instead. And what if she was a hybrid human? Could she be?

Review: The Passage by Justin Cronin

The Passage (The Passage, #1)
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.”

First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

As civilization swiftly crumbles into a primal landscape of predators and prey, two people flee in search of sanctuary. FBI agent Brad Wolgast is a good man haunted by what he’s done in the line of duty. Six-year-old orphan Amy Harper Bellafonte is a refugee from the doomed scientific project that has triggered apocalypse. He is determined to protect her from the horror set loose by her captors. But for Amy, escaping the bloody fallout is only the beginning of a much longer odyssey—spanning miles and decades—towards the time and place where she must finish what should never have begun.
Synopsis from Goodreads

I read this for a bookclub, and I wasn't sure what to expect. To be honest, I hadn't even heard of this book until The Twelve was nominated in the 2012 Goodreads awards. Now that I've read it, I can actually say... WOW!

Review and Blog Tour: The Harvesting

Rating: 4.5 stars

The Harvesting (Book 1 of The Harvesting Series)

 by Melanie Karsak

Expected pub: Sept 18, 2012

Buy this book:
The Harvesting
“To label this a zombie book would be a false pretense . . . this is so much more than that. What you start out with and what you end up with are very different, and those twists and turns in the middle will make your heart beat faster over and over again.”– Colossal Pop
It’s all fun and games until someone ends up undead.
Though Layla reluctantly returns home to rural Hamletville after a desperate call from her psychic grandmother, she could never have anticipated the horror of what Grandma Petrovich has foreseen. The residents of Hamletville will need Layla’s help if they are to survive the zombie apocalypse that’s upon them. But that is not the only problem. With mankind silenced, it soon becomes apparent that we were never alone. As the beings living on the fringe seek to reclaim power, Layla must find a way to protect the ones she loves or all humanity may be lost.
Lori's Review:
Layla is living her life in Washington D.C. She's independent, she loves what she does and she has a hot date that night. Well, that is, until her Grandmother calls and insists that she return home. Layla knows to not second guess her Grandma. If Grandma says come it is for a very good reason. Once she gets home her Grandma has her running odd errands and preparing for something. What that is, her Grandma, doesn't say.
It doesn't take long for the world to unravel and for Grandma's visions to come true.

I kind of loved this book. Like a lot. I wasn't too sure when I finished it that I was in love with it. But now I know for sure that I am.
I should warn you....this isn't your average zombie book. Oh there are plenty of undead and action. But there is also other supernatural elements at play here. Like the psychic Grandmother. It's kind of a trip actually.

Thinking...... about Goodreads.

Warning Blunt Honesty Ahead. Also Opinions.

So the other day I was perusing (is that a word? I used it and there is not a red dotted line so let's roll with it, shall we)....yes, yes, I was perusing the wonderful site Goodreads and I happened across a minor scuffle on a fellow users review. Actually, it's one I see all the time. It made me question what the real purpose of the site is, and how I think, authors, and bloggers/reviewers use the site differently than an average Joe Reader would.

Grace Lost by M. Lauryl Lewis

4 Stars ~ Kami's Review

This turned out to be a decent book, but it could have been way better.
It started out slow and kinda boring, but eventually I got into it. It was almost like the author couldnt get into her 'groove' until she wrote for a while.

I liked the characters, dont get me wrong, but in the beginning, and some parts later on, I wanted to smack Zoe. Way too much crying for me. Yeah this is my issue, but I like my women to be a little tougher in the books I read. I want a bad ass zombie slaying chick who kicks ass and takes name, not some girl who cries at the drop of a hat.

For me while reading the dialogue between the characters I find myself asking who the hell talks like this, especially in a freaking zombie crazy world. Everything they said was extremely proper, and said in vivid detail. This was part of the reason I had trouble getting into the book in the beginning. It didnt feel real, it felt fake and forced. Like I said it got better later on, but I would still read something and roll my eyes because it just didnt fit.

I like how these are smart zombies, who are as devious as they are gross. A nice change for a zombie novel.

I dont really consider this a spoiler since it has to be running through your mind as a possibility the whole time you are reading the book. But if you dont wish to know, skip ahead. The whole pregnancy thing pissed me off. How stupid, and how naive can you possibly be to not consider this before you go and have sex a bunch of times unprotected? I think we all knew it was coming, so no surprise there but come on! I blame both Boggs and Zoe. Dumb dumb dumb!

Will I read the next book in the series? Absolutly! I really want to see where the author is going with this, and I really want to know what happens to the characters. As much as some of them pissed me off I still like them, lol.
Will I recommend it? Yes, to all my zombie loving friends. Lori this is you my dear!
