Blurb: First in a stunning new trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Teresa Mummert. “I’m not naive. I know I don’t get the happily ever after. My knight in shining armor took the highway detour around this god forsaken shit hole. I’ve made peace with that. That doesn’t mean I’m going to lay down like a doormat and let every cocky prick in the trailer park have his way with me.” Cass lives a depressing life in a small trailer park in Eddington, Georgia, with her mother and abusive boyfriend Jackson. She works hard to barely make ends meet. But everything changes when Tucker White, the lead singer in the band Damaged, walks into her diner. He tries to show her that there is more to life than the hand she has been dealt, but Cass soon learns that being with Tucker will come at a high price.

Lori's Thoughts:

Cass is a young girl leading a horrible life in a trailer park in Georgia. Her mom and boyfriend are junkies, she works a dead end waitressing job, and she suffers abuse from the deadbeat junkie boyfriend. Her life has made her hard. Until Tucker White enters her life. He turns it upside down and takes her on a wild ride. For the first time ever Cass knows what it's like to live.

I loved this book. It was emotional and dark and gritty. I cried as Cass struggled throughout the whole thing. The writing was wonderful. Mummert really grows as a writer throughout the book. She put a lot of depth and soul into her characters and I believed in them.

Tucker White is every girls dream come true. I don't know many women who wouldn't want someone to cherish them like Tucker does Cass. Do they fall in love quickly? Yes. But it was beautiful and good.

"It won't always be rainbows and butterflies, but I promise you I will do everything in my power to make you happy, Cass."

This book had some really gut wrenching scenes. I have a hard time stomaching the thought of hard drug use. Especially intravenously. Ugh. Thinking about it literally makes my skin crawl and my stomach turn. Mummert does such a great job of portraying it as the gross thing that it is. There was one scene in the beginning of the book that had tears in my eyes. It was so tough to read.
"Disgusted, I threw the food on the floor in front of me, and then rushed to my mother's side, carefully pulling the needle from her arm.. 'She fucking likes it. It shuts her the fuck up.' Jax motioned to my mother who was practically catatonic."
How could you not feel for Cass. It's a mixed bag of feelings too. I am saddened by her life, and I am angry at her for staying in this situation, but I also have empathy because it is truly hard to walk away from a life like that. Especially if you are poor.
This book is so darkly beautiful that I couldn't help by love it. It really spoke to me. My only complaint is that is just so short. Now to go and pre-order my print copy, because I have to have this book in my collection.
